Edmonton Folk Fest (And Our New Album Is Out NOW!)
It was a 13 hour journey from Lillooet to Sherwood Park, the day before our first Edmonton Folk Music Festival experience would take place. We were tired but so extremely excited. The atmosphere of Edmonton felt amazing; spirits were high and their was the sweet sound of good music filling the air. It was August 5th 2016 and we had just picked up our new album ‘GOLD’ for the first time. So we checked our merch in to the festival and went straight to work, doing two interviews and performances on CBC and CKUA Radio’s respectively.
The next day we got to see some awesome acts and meet genuinely nice people. That night, we played the ‘after party’ for staff, volunteers, guests and artists. People loved it. The vibe was out of this world, yet we were all so evidently present together. We played ’til almost 3am because the amazing crowd wouldn’t let us stop. A few hours of sleep later, we found our way down to the festival site to play our Stage 1 set which our shuttle driver said was what every one seemed to be talking about. It was glorious. Friends, families, all ages, outside… Just glorious.
We then did a CD signing and of course, that meant that all the fam that showed up got free swugs (sweaty hugs). It was funny because so many people asked… “A reggae band from Grande Prairie?” It was probably the most common question of the weekend and we loved explaining the beauty of how we all came from different places but now call Alberta our home.
Derek and I (Caleb) had the honour of joining our new friends from Senegal – Amadou Fall Trio for their final set. When we got off the stage, we received a message from Jake, saying that we had won the Edmonton Folk Music Festival ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’ award. Tears filled my eyes. Derek was wearing sun glasses but despite the fact that I couldn’t see his eyes, I know he was emotional about the news as well. The number one folk music festival in all of North America had just chosen us for an award such as that. Wow. We didn’t know our weekend could get better, yet it did! However, it didn’t stop there. A few hours later, we had the extremely humbling privilege of singing our song ‘Family’ from the main stage with about 20,000 people.
